Jananathan calls for subsidies for debut directors

The audio release of the upcoming flick Meeravudan Krishna was held on Monday at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai. The film has been directed by Krishna. According to Krishna, the film emphasises on the importance of good understanding between a husband and wife in order to lead a happy married life. The film will be a family subject.

The guests at the event included prominent directors like S.P.Jananathan, Seenu Ramasamy and Samuthirakani. Speaking at the event S.P. Jananathan said that the first thing he did upon being invited for this event was to inquire whether the director was registered with the directors’ union. As it turned out, at the time of inviting him, Krishna was not yet registered. Jananathan said that, being the treasurer of the union, it would not be proper of him to attend the event while Krishna was still unregistered. But, this prompted Krishna to immediately register with the union and so he consented to be a guest at the event.

Jananathan said that it was very important for every director to register with the union because it gave better opportunities to interact with other like minded people and for exchange of ideas. He gave the example of National Award winning director Thyagarajan Kumararaja who was still not registered with the union. When inquired, he had said that he did not have enough money to pay the registration fee. Upon winning the award, Jananathan had told him to make use of part of that prize money to register with the union.

He added that the Government was doing something very good by honouring debut directors in this way. However, the industry too needs to do something by making things easy for debut directors. This can be done by providing equipments at subsidised rates for new comers so that they can convince producers to finance their ventures. This point was received with very lively applause by the audience.

Seenu Ramasamy said that he was surprised when he first heard that Krishna had directed a film. In fact, Krishna was invited to do a character opposite Saranya in last year’s award winning film Thenmerkku Paruvaakkattru. But, Krishna had turned down the offer and he had lost track of what Krishna was up to. This news came out of the blue. He added that it has indeed turned out well that Krishna did not accept his offer, else this directorial debut would not have been possible.

The audio CD of Meeravudan Krishna was released by Jananathan. The film is expected to release in April.
