VALLINAM SONGS REVIEW

After impressing the audience in his first outing with the supernatural thriller Eeram, director Arivazhagan teams up with Thaman once again for Vallinam. The film stars Nakul and Mrudhula Basker with Atul Kulkarni playing an important role.
The build-up, for a change, comes in the form of vocals and it sets you up for something bombastic with the teasing powerchords in the background suggesting the same, but when the percussions break in, it’s refreshingly restrained and gives us a better perspective in terms of tempo and groove. This is a track that’s tailor made for STR and he’s made to showcase his full range and he’s ably supported by Mukesh and the composer Thaman. Lyrically the song attempts at being a typical ‘youth anthem’ but the grammar pundits are sure to come down hard on the English verses!
Haricharan sounds great throughout the song delivering a fine performance, shouldering the entire tune. But you get the sense that the song is rushing on him right from the opening guitar strumming. Also, a feeling of trying too hard clouds over the tune. The composer seems to have a good idea in terms of packaging it but at the same time he may be guilty of putting too much into it.
What stands out in this track is the underplay of orchestration. Thaman allows the notes to breathe freely without being interrupted by an accompanying instrument. The easy going tempo serves its purpose well in the cause. But the composer fills the speakers with a string section arrangement just at the right moment as the chorus kicks in. The track features a vocal performance from the film’s hero Nakul briefly (the song does have his name!), but it’s Andrea’s show all the way and she eases through it like a zephyr.
Thaman recognizes the potential of the original tune’s melody and highlights it deservingly in its reprised version. He assumes the vocal duties in this trimmed track and rearranges the song with live drums and an exciting symphonic arrangement. Most importantly, the tempo has been brought down to perfection.
The opening moments of the song are purely anthemic with words uttered with purpose and precision, backed by an escalating string section only to be cut short by a tiny digital bridge. But the song returns to its mainstay of a group of young male voices chanting out a chorus that holds the film’s title making for a riveting theme song.
