Music director K follows up with his impressive display of talent in Mugamoodi and Aarohanam for P.T. Selvakumar’s directorial debut. The film stars Vinay Rai, Premgi, Lakshmi Rai, Aravind Akash and Sathyan.

Vaa Machi
Singers: M. L. R. Karthikeyan, Mukesh, Velmurugan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

K seems to have picked up from exactly where he left off with Mugamoodi, and particularly the famous ‘Bar Anthem’ he scored for Myskin. This track is similar in mood, tempo and orchestration except that the irony of the Bar Anthem has been replaced with words describing the perils of marriage.

Vidhavidhamaga
Singers: Chinmayi, Vijay Prakash
Lyrics: Madhan Karky

Vijay Prakash and Chinmayi deliver fine performance and save the track from sinking into a sea of clichés. While the track is quite uptempo for most part of the song, the fills and the interludes don’t quite grab your attention. The chorus section too seems to have been mixed louder than necessary.

Theera Theera
Singers: Anand Aravindakshan, K, Premgi, Sean Roldan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

K, seems to be caught between expanding his musical horizons and the demands of commercial music. The result being a track that tries too hard to emote and entertain. One feels that the composer could have given the percussions a different treatment as the song’s low end sounds rather dated.

Alayadhey Summa Summa
Singers: K
Lyrics: Gnanakaravel

This is the track that was composed last for the film, as the production team took an eleventh hour decision to rope in Powerstar Sreenivasan for a special appearance. Expectedly the lyrics aim to evoke a few chuckles and play into Powerstar’s image. The track rests on an electronic groove with bursts of fierce rapping.

Maida Maidhanaum
Singers: Priya Hemesh
Lyrics: Gnanakaravel

A club number which seems like it’s written to suit Lakshmi Rai’s personality. Priya Hemesh delivers the sensuality in the right doses. The song has its moments where it turns lively but then it retreats back into familiar ground.

Verdict: Onbathula Guru is far from being novel and short of being ‘K’ommercial.
