The Sangeet Natak Akademi is one of the most prestigious fellowships in the country and to be honored with an award by them is truly a recognition of one’s contribution to an art form. While the academy is known to devote its attention to purists, it has made an exception this year by awarding the musical maestro Ilayaraja.

It is an extremely rare affair for the organization to award a notable film personality, but they made a rightful exception in the case of Ilayaraja this year. The Sangeet Natak Akademi was set up in 1952 by the Government of India to extend recognition and adulation to key contributors in performing arts.
