Lakshmi Rai after being seen in Mankatha and Kanchana has done A L Vijay’s Thandavam. In an exclusive interview to behindwoods.com, she talks about the film, her co-stars and her dream role.

Your role in Thaandavam

I won’t be able to completely disclose my role in Thaandavam. One thing I must say is that I am playing a completely de-glam role in the film unlike my other films. I will let the role be a secret until the movie releases.

Anushka, Amy Jackson, Santhanam and Vikram

I never shared screen space with Anushka so I do not know much about her. But I enjoyed working with Amy and she is really a fun person to work with. I have combination scenes with her and we shot in London that I enjoyed much.

I have already worked with Santhanam so it’s not a new experience. Because of Santhanam, I had to go for a lot of retakes. Something about him cracks me up every time we work together and I couldn’t control my laughter.

Yeah, songs are beautiful in the film and I hope everybody will like the way they are shot. Unfortunately, I do not have a song in the film but the songs are really nice and it’s GV Prakash’s 25th film. I think that factor will also give enough mileage for the film. Vijay has done so much in his career in this young age and it was wonderful working with him.

Experience working in Malayalam film industry

I never thought about doing Malayalam movies but when I started doing it, the films started doing wonders for me. It’s probably the kind of roles I do there but it has been wonderful and I am lucky enough to get challenging roles. The films I have done in Malayalam are far better than my Tamil movies. I still have a long way to go and I believe to do good movies in Tamil as well.

Working with Ajith

Ajith is a great man and Mankatha was my first film with him. I know how difficult it is to make it big when you come from a non-film background. I am from such a background so I know that. I really look up to him for having achieved so much. Whatever little bit I worked with him I shared great time with him. And Mankatha team was a great team to work with.

Your favorite film(s)

It has to be Dham Dhoom. Because it was a comeback for me although I was earlier introduced and due to certain wrong decisions I ended up in a lot of wrong movies. I am grateful to Jeeva for having brought me back to Tamil films. Even now my fans want me to do a film like Dham Dhoom. That movie is also very special to me because of Jeeva sir.

Irumbukottai Murattusingam is also one of my favorite movies because I did the role of a cow girl in the movie. I believe in doing what excites me and this movie let me do that. Kanchana and Mankatha have been very special and close to my heart since they are my recent and successful movies.

Dream role

Well it’s a difficult question to answer because I have never thought about a dream role. I have been part of this industry for the past eight years and I am growing as an actor and I can see visible improvement in my acting. I want to continue to do that and make every role my dream role. Even if I have less screen space in a film, I want my role to be significant and create an impact.

Gossip, rumor and controversies

I don’t handle them. It’s sometimes shocking and upsetting but I laugh most of the time. I do not react to my rumors and I sometimes wonder why only I am targeted. I also think its part and parcel of the celebrity life. Since you are constantly in the limelight, you will be targeted.

Walking the ramp and modeling

Though I am from the modeling industry, I have not done many shows. Since I am a known face now, I enjoy being a showstopper in shows. I walked the ramp for my friend designer Shravan Kumar who is a great designer and whose clothes I admire a lot. I walked for Chennai Fashion Week and also for another award function. Other than that, I have not done anything.

Would you try your hands in production or direction?

Not off screen for sure and I do not have the talent. I have no knowledge in direction. I am enjoying whatever I am doing now and will keep doing it. I do not want any diversions from that.

Favorite movies/stars

I really like Shankar’s movies. When it comes to comedy movies I like Priyadarshan movies since he is a great entertainer. These are the two directors I have always liked. I find Ajith and Vikram to be really talented people and look up to them and they deserve where they are now.

Your fitness mantra

Everything depends on what you eat. Do not eat junk food and munch occasionally. Also do some exercise. Take your health seriously. Do not starve in the name of diet. These are the basic steps; although everyone knows nobody wants to do it. I am not doing anything special to keep myself fit other than these steps.

Thaandavam

Thaandavam is going to be the most promising film in recent times. Vikram, Anushka, Amy and I have done our best. I am keeping my fingers crossed for the release of the movie and I hope you will watch the movie and enjoy it too.
