Mappillai Vinayagar theater complex is a famous landmark for cinema buffs in Madurai. This theater was opened in 1982 and it started off screening Hindi and English movies. Vikram's Thaandavam will be the last movie to be screened at this theater as the theater's premise has been sold; a shopping mall would come in its place.
Of late, there has been this trend of old theaters being turned into marriage halls or shopping malls. In some other cases, old theaters are renovated and turned into a trendy multiplex replete with good eateries and shopping facilities. In this case, Mappillai Vinayagar has taken the former route.
Avid cine goers in Madurai must be a sad lot as one of their landmark theaters is a part of history now.
