The theme of Yaaruda Mahesh is centered on the hero’s search for a character named Mahesh. This entire episode is told with heavy doses of fun and entertainment. R. Madhan Kumar has written and directed this movie with Sundeep Kishan, Dimple Chopade, Livingstone, Uma Padmanabhan, Srinath and Jagan in the cast. Music has been composed by Gopisundar. The music was released recently by the producers in a grand function in the presence of the young and promising directors of Tamil cinema.

Yaaruda Antha Mahesh
Singers: Anna Katharina Valayil, Gopi Sundar
Lyrics: R. Madhan Kumar

The music director tries to take a simple idea and make something more out of it by filling it with as many ‘urban’ elements as possible but the result is underwhelming to say the least.  Vocally the song doesn’t present the singer with an opportunity to show skill, the English melody carries a strong resemblance to something we have heard in the international pop charts.

Puthu Paarvai
Singers: Haricharan, Priya Hemesh
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

A pretty generic romantic duet that has some decent melodies and competent singing. But the song feels lacking of an x-factor to take it to the next level. The whole production feels a bit ‘thin’ and gives the impression of being empty within.

Vayadhai Keduthu
Singers: Anna Katharina Valayil, Suchith Suresan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

Another electronica track that begins on a promising note with the phasing effects alternating in stereo. Just as you feel that the song has set a platform for something interesting it fades to a close! Anna Katharina shows good versatility throughout the album including this track.

Odum Unakithu
Singers: Anna Katharina Valayil, Suchith Suresan
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

The song’s lyrical content and the singer’s emotiveness suggest that this could be a club/item song. The musical shift from electronic to native percussions is nicely done. The singing is sensual as per the demands of the song. The song is pretty uptempo as expected, and the tune is fairly direct.

Yemathita
Singers: Gopi Sundar, Mukesh
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

A peppy gaana song that has a unique Kerala feel to it with its percussions and its boat-race battle cry-like chorus chants. The song has been delivered well by Mukesh, but his delivery style is reminiscent of a particular gaana track written and performed by Kamal Haasan in PKS.

Uyire Uyiril
Singers: Gopi Sundar
Lyrics: Na. Muthukumar

A beautiful melodious composition sung by the composer himself, brings the album to a close. This is a soft song that goes through a lovely organic ebb and flow and is complimented by the heartfelt singing. The song is predominantly guitar driven and the playing is exquisite, especially the fills. A very pleasant and simple tune that takes its own shape without bombarding you with dramatic orchestration.

Verdict: Novel effort that’s passable even if it’s left wanting for more in places.
