Sundattam is a movie that focuses on carom, the popular indoor game. Irfan and Arundhati star in lead roles while newcomer Britto is responsible for the tunes of Sundattam. Now, onto the music review of this movie.

Narumugaye
Singers: Aalaap Raaju, Madhubala
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

Aalaap Raaju has become an expert at such breezy numbers. Electronic beats and pleasant acoustic guitar backing make this duet a decent listen. This might visit the charts.

Adi Unnale
Singers: Karthik
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

Karthik is back at it again in a solo romantic number which has its fair share of pathos. Acoustic guitar, flutes, strings and keys are a part of the interludes. The percussion pattern keeps changing in the song with the heavy thumping one making a mark.

Nethiyilae
Singers: Kaali
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

This is a ‘gaana’ song which is typical to Tamil film music. The treatment is typically heavy and rustic like other ‘kuthu’ songs. The singing gets uninspiring at times thanks to a heavy nasal effect. The guitar towards the end is a poignant little touch. On the whole, a passable gaana thanks to the catchy native percussion.

Kan Kondu
Singers: Britto
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

This one is a mellow song that is again dedicated to the pain that love can result in. The instrumental patterns are dramatic and complement the sad mood of the song. Britto tries his best to infuse feeling into his vocals.

Kadhal Varum Varai
Singers: Saindhavi
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

This number has a heavy electronic sound, be it the little intricate sounds or the beats. Even the instrumentals sound like digitally processed ones. Saindhavi is typically fresh in rendering this song. The tabla additions are neat.

Vizhiyil Vithai
Singers: Madhu, Ranjith, Roshini
Lyrics: Britto & Palani Bharathi, Marana Gana Viji, Na. Muthukumar, Snehan

This song is again backed by electronic percussions and borrows from genres like rock and rap. The sound of the song is not consistent as it crisscrosses styles. Towards the end, it sounds like a typical kuthu song after starting off like a rock number.

Verdict: The album is a decent effort without being exceptional. Melody and racy numbers occupy equal pride of place in Sundattam.
