Surya’s first attempt with an offbeat subject, Nanda brought out the actor out of who was considered to be only a tender and romantic youngster till then. Surya’s first day at the college - as he enters, a girl is being maliciously ragged. He tries to be patient, however the raggers get the most out of his temper. Poor them, the following scene in which Surya thrashes them to bits and pieces is considered very raw and intense – emotionally. The way in which he yanks a branch off from a tree and uses it to thrash the bad guys is so realistic, so less common in cinema that it’s impact on the audience could not be overlooked.
