Oscar and Grammy award winner A.R. Rahman has come under fire from Girish Karnad. Girish himself is a popular film personnel who has won many National awards and one might best recall his appearance in films like Hey Ram, Minsara Kanavu and recently in Mugamoodi.
In the past few weeks Girish Karnad has been in the news for his frank and opinionated comments on Rabindranath Tagore, saying that Tagore was a good poet but a below par playwright. This statement stirred a huge uproar in West Bengal and many other parts of India. Adding to that, very recently in Bangalore, while addressing the All India Urdu Manch, Girish had criticized the Mozart of Madras of compromising on lyrical importance for the sake of the melody and tune. He did give credit to him for his composing skills and musicianship.
Famed lyricist Pa.Vijay took the opportunity to assert the fact that Rahman is extremely particular with the pronunciation of Tamil words. Even in the case where North Indian singers are used for a Tamil track, Pa. Vijay says that Rahman insists on perfect diction from them.
