AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH SENTHIL KUMAR - EYE OF RAJAMOULI

Interview Team : D Meera Chithirappaavai; Balasaravanan; Jyothsna

A musical instrument gives out various musical experiences without the understanding of a raagam or a taalam; the musician becomes the master here!Similarly, a camera does not realize what kind of visual experiences it is subjecting its viewers to; the cinematographer becomes the master here!

Did the camera even realize it was shooting a spectacle like Baahubali?

This is what Senthil Kumar - the eye behind Baahubali and Rajamouli, had to say in a conversation with D.Meera Chithirappaavai.

Train of thoughts after the massive response received for Baahubali…

So much of hard work has gone into making Baahubali. I am obviously proud of our team but the actual fact is, I am still not able to sync in with this kind of response it has received. As I was working even the day previous to its release, I am zoned out and finding it difficult to assimilate this overwhelming response.I am glad that it is on a good high!

I am glad that it is on a good high

At this instance, would you like to revisit the beginning days of your career?

Yes definitely! I was roped into a Telugu film called Aithe, a good script which was low on budget. At that point of time, Telugu industry was loaded with glamorized concepts but Aithe stood out as it was a realistic film with a rustic shade. We were apprehensive about how audience will embrace it. Surprisingly, it was well received by the audience and major credits go to the efficient promotions that were done. I was highly satisfied when my first piece of work was doing well and it received a national award for the best regional film -Telugu.

I was highly satisfied when my first piece of work was doing well

So experimentation has been your style since the first film…

Yes, may be because I do what is required for the script rather than following a template. Each script is unique, eventually my work also becomes unique. This has been my philosophy since my first film and now I see this evidently giving back to my career in a big way as there is absolutely no monotony.

SS Rajamouli in the professional front and in personal front…

Professionally Rajamouli sir is a person who is constantly pushing his own limits. He doesn't sail in a comfort zone and makes sure his team also reaches the limit he sets. This characteristic makes him a person who cannot be satisfied easily. Having said that, I am extremely proud to have associated with him for more than a decade now. I am constantly updating myself in terms of technology and trends in world cinema to meet his needs. Along with him, my craftsmanship has also improved to a superior degree. For him I want to be a person who says “Ask and it shall be given unto you”

Personally he is a man who is extremely humble in nature. He strongly routes himself to his family and probably he draws all his energy and inspiration from there. Any time, I can confidently land at his residence even without giving him a ring and he would extend his helping hand for me. I know Rama Rajamouli, his wife, too. So this association has become more personal and they have become my family.

I am extremely proud to have associated with him for more than a decade now

Your personal preparation for Baahubali...

The moment Rajamouli sir narrated the script of Baahubali, I was blown away with the idea itself. The true essence of cinema is that it is a visual medium. I feel of late we are falling short on it by going overboard on drama. But the script of Baahubali itself gave me a kick due to the scope it had for visuals and effects. The entire team comprising of Rajamouli sir, production designer - Sabu Cyril sir, Costume designer - Rama Rajamouli and all the other concept artists performed an extensive research to acquire details for designing every element. My assistants who are a team of five started collecting waterfall references and edited footage of other war sequences that were already featured films. We watched everything to make sure to touch upon the untouched elements. While we researched well, we also deciphered the approach towards certain things.

Personally, I started imagining myself living in that period. I must say I started living the epic right from the day Rajamouli sir narrated the script.

I must say I started living the epic right from the day Rajamouli sir narrated the script.

Your vision for a film like Baahubali which is dependent highly on the post production end for the completion of a shot

I agree that Baahubali is 70% based on visual effects. Thanks to the concept artists who worked throughout the project who would give a skeleton of everything that is going to happen at the CG end. For example, for the waterfall sequence, they drew the waterfall by giving us a scale at which it would appear on screen. This enabled us to picturise every sequence and decide what needs to be shot on real location and what will be done as graphics. The real challenge in this project was, every element from the hairstyle of a character to props in the atmosphere were well designed and I had to make sure that I expose my frame in a manner that enunciates every element arranged in the frame along with the right emotions.

Did your judgement misfire at any point? Was the outcome good or bad?

At many points I saw an output that I never thought of. Few looked much better than my expectation and few fell short. Mostly, time stood as the only felon to achieve 100% quality. Though the film is higher on budget we had time constraints.

time stood as the only felon to achieve 100% quality

Any special mention to a technician?

Here I must mention my DI colourist Mr.Shiva, who has been working with me since the film, Arundhati. He came up with different colour tones for each episode of the film to avoid monotony. Conscious effort was taken to avoid a flashy feeling in the visuals and the colour transitions were kept gradual. This has been a tedious work and he has been working since 1 ½ years on this. With all the last minute chaos, it was like a rollercoaster ride towards the end.

it was like a rollercoaster ride towards the end

Magadheera and Baahubali are definitely two different movies… but there is a slight part where the grandeur or spectacle overlaps… How did you handle this?

Rajamouli envisioned everything in Baahubali BIG and lavish. From a statue to palace entrance, it was made humongously huge. We wanted to go beyond the grandeur we created in Magadheera. To achieve this, the first line of action was amplifying the scale of everything that was created. In case of architecture lot of effort was taken to recreate ancient Indian architecture without any resemblance of the Mughal period. Lot of detailing was done in Baahubali than in Magadheera.

Does it take any extra responsibility while canning two stars at a time ?

It is a challenge definitely! For me anyone who comes in front of my camera is not a star or actor but just a character, For me it is about storytelling and filmmaking. My angles purely depends on the character sketch and the emotion that needs to be brought out in a particular shot. My dynamics differ with respect to the narration.

For me it is about storytelling and filmmaking

Your opinion about the idea of an item song…

For a movie like Baahubali, lots of money is at stake. It has to impress all class of audience. To attain the supreme level of satisfaction, audience needs different aspects in the film. Keeping this in mind, item song is undoubtedly one of the aspects while catering to larger set of audience.

Did Keeravani's music compliment or direct your visuals

I can really not talk about Keeravani sir’s music. I am very fortunate for having the privilege of working with him. His BGM has elevated the visuals to the greatest extent possible. So his music definitely complimented the visuals through BGM and directed my visuals in songs. The best part of Baahubali is every technicians work complimented each others.

Press the buzzer

- 2 ½ years for a film
The day Baahubali’s script was narrated, we knew this was once in a lifetime opportunity. As we started working, the turn of events reassured our decision and strengthened the commitment we had towards the project.

- Family support
My heartfelt thanks to my wife who filled the void during my absence at home. I have two young boys at home, one 5 years old and 3 years old. Lot of sacrifice has gone through by my family and now they are more than happy for me and Baahubali.

- Nasser sir
He is an actor who can shift expressions in a single frame. I was mindblown with his performance.

- Sathyaraj sir
He was one character that looked exactly like it was designed to look like. We forgot that it was Sathyaraj sir and started calling him by his character name, ‘Kattappa’

Tamil technicians are dominating other industries. What do you think the reason is?

As far as Telugu industry is concerned, the visual approach was on a lower key. But Tamil industry saw legends like Balu Mahendran, Mani Ratnam who were visual directors. Through them a culture developed and technicians like PC Sreeram, Santosh Sivan emerged. This legacy followed and they embrace Tamil technicians to a great extent.

This legacy followed and they embrace Tamil technicians to a great extent.

When can we see a full fledged Tamil cinema from you ?

I would definitely love to work in a Tamil cinema. If I get a call from anyone with a script that impresses me, I will be on board. I have lots of respect for Tamil cinema.

Now that you have agreed that you wish to work for a Tamil film, let’s set up a dream project. You can choose the following

Director - Shankar sir or Mani ratnam sir
Actor - Suriya (I am amazed with his versatility. I am in awe with his performance)
Actress - I will talk to Shankar sir and Suriya to cast the right lady (He seems to play it safe with the ladies)
Genre - A dark shade mafia film
Music - Keeravani

Your message before you sign off

I know there are numerous young enthusiasts in South India who want to make it big in the entertainment industry. If they have it in them, they can definitely hit the bull’s eye because I am a person who had zero contacts in the Industry and came from a financially weak background. If I could make a Baahubali, definitely anyone with genuine aspiration and determination can!

Wishing you all sucess Senthil Kumar! We await your entry into Tamil Industry soon!
