In 2005, Kushboo featured in almost
all the vernacular media for her statement
on pre-marital sex. This had allegedly
hurt the sentiments of many people
in Tamil Nadu and had created a big
uproar resulting in the burning of
her effigies. Whether she meant what
she said or whether things were blown
out of proportion by a handful of
hypersensitive individuals is anybody’s
guess; but Khushboo went through the
emotional shredder.
She
received support from a few quarters of the industry,
Suhasini being one of the most vocal supporters.
It must have been unnerving for her (who has had
temples built in her honor) to see people protesting
so violently against her. But it is to Khushboo’s
credit that she tided over the storm. The aftermath
of this issue had cascaded even to 2006 when she
was offered the role of Periyar’s second
wife in the film titled Periyar. Cinematographer
Thangar Bachchan refused to shoot scenes pertaining
to her in the film which was lamented by Kushboo
later.
