What is good news for some need not
be good for others. When CM Karunanidhi
announced that the ceiling for ticket
rates within city limits will be Rs.
50, the common man was overjoyed;
going to theatres would be affordable.
But, producers and theatre owners
were not amused. They were actually
perturbed at the thought of the losses
that they would incur during Pongal.
The multiplex managements were desperate
for a rollback.
Theatre
owners met the CM and presented their case. The
CM seemed to understand and within a week of the
announcement of the price cut came the announcement
that the ceiling rate would be Rs. 95. Exhibitors
and producers were relieved, but things are back
to square one for the common man who will have
to burn a hole through his pocket to watch a movie.
The one point to ponder over here is that whether
the tax benefits that are being given to the movies
named in Tamil can balance the losses of the so
called price slash.
