How do you react when people compare your growth to that of Rajinikanth?

I can never accept that. The struggles he went through to get where he is, the reach he has now and his contributions to Tamil Cinema are unimaginable. It’s absolutely unfair and most of all illogical to compare my two years in the industry with his growth.

I don’t just celebrate Thalaivar, I worship him. Forget about me, I even get very angry when people compare anyone with him.

Most of all, I get nervous when people compare me with anyone. It brings upon me a bigger responsibility.

It’s absolutely unfair and most of all illogical to compare my two years in the industry with Thalaivar's growth.

How does it feel to be called lucky?

I generally mask my face with a smile when people call me lucky. I know that they are absolutely unaware of the hardships I had to go through to stand where I’m today. I stopped considering myself lucky, when I lost my dad.

I started as a mimicry artiste, which is a long route to the industry and to be frank, such artistes are never rightly recognized due to the common belief that mimicry artists lack individuality. People appreciate our talents but opportunities are hard to come.

From an over enthusiastic mimicry artiste, reality show participant, anchor, character artiste in 3, an hour long role in Marina, a multi-starrer (Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga), to a solo hero is a very long journey indeed.

The only luck I believe I have earned is the love people have given me.

The rejections…

You do not get a job as an anchor in a leading television channel, if you are ordinary. Look at Gopinath and DD. They are separate brands. That’s the kind of material TVs look for.

Even as an anchor, it wasn’t easy for me. I started as a substitute. In fact I messed up my first audition..

When I auditioned for the first time to host a show, I was literally chased away. They said anchoring isn’t my game. I walked back home, weeping all the way like a baby. That moment I promised myself that I will become a great anchor someday.

After a lot of rejections and being a mere substitute, I finally made it as an anchor.

I walked back home, weeping all the way like a baby.

Are your on-screen and off-screen images similar?

Absolutely not… I don’t smoke or drink. Dialogues play major part in my roles. But in reality, I don’t talk much. The one common thing is my energy level. Whenever I’m with my friends I tend to be hyper.

Your family’s reactions to gossips…

Not much of a reaction there. They know me and hence they do not raise questions at all. I’m usually the one who to upset with rumors that are absolutely baseless and nonsense. I’d go inside my shell and sulk. It’d take me a couple of days to come out.

I’d go inside my shell and sulk

The gossip that hurt you deeply…

It was once reported that I was going to divorce my wife and this came in when my wife was carrying our child. The worst part is that she spotted the news item and brought it to me. I laughed my lungs out at the first sight of it. Then I looked at Aarthi. She was hurt pretty bad and that hurt me.

I was trying hard to maintain a positive energy around her during her pregnancy and this one really affected both of us.

Recently there was a very funny one that I was hiring bouncers and terrorizing people around me.

Aarthi was hurt pretty bad and that hurt me.

Your wife’s reaction to onscreen romance…

My wife neither comments on it nor talks about it ever. Also, I know my limits and my films generally don’t have excessive romance. So, I’m kind of safe.

I know my limits

Perks of being an actor…

Apart from the recognition and lots of love from the people, it’s now easier to get movie tickets. I don’t wait in very long queues, or worse get disappointed at not being able to get a ticket to the first day first show of my favourite films.

Kochadaiiyaan…

I’m a diehard Rajini fan and I’ll always remain one. When it comes to Thalaivar’s films and my films, I’m very superstitious. I watch the first shows only at Satyam.

I recently saw Kochadaiiyaan’s trailer and it’s just spectacular! With his incredible voice, Thalaivar makes it so real, even though its animation. I could feel him.

I’m waiting! (he says, like Vijay from Thuppakki)

I’m a diehard Rajini fan and I’ll always remain one.

The things you miss the most…

Nothing much really. I try to remain the same as ever. I go to films thrice a week with my friends and family.  I still eat at my favourite road side food stalls. I haven’t started going to star hotels yet. For some reason they freak me out.

Yes, people do come for photographs and autographs. But I really don’t mind that, considering they are the reason why I’m here.

I haven’t started going to star hotels yet. For some reason they freak me out.

Your dreams for Aaradhana…

I’ve been pretty good father lately. I spend a lot of time with Aaradhana. I tell her stories and put her to sleep.

I want her to lead a normal life, a life away from all the glitz and glamour of filmdom. I don’t want her to miss out on all the fun of being a kid, just because she’s an actor’s child. I myself am trying not to take my stardom to head.

I grew amidst a huge family and I want Aaradhana to enjoy the company of a big, happy family.

I spend a lot of time with Aaradhana. I tell her stories and put her to sleep.

Dream…

At least a film each with Shankar and Murugadoss.

I wouldn’t…

I’d want to keep myself and my films away from all forms of perversions and vulgarity.

The people you wish to thank…

Firstly, thanks to the people. They accepted and encouraged me. Then my friends, for being very true! Finally, all the people I’ve worked with!

What next?

My next will be with Ethir Neechal director, Durai Senthilkumar. The project has been titled Taana, meaning Policeman- That’s how the policemen were addressed by the people during the British rule. Sri Divya pairs up with me in this film again after VVS. Anirudh will do the music and Sukumar sir will work on the cinematography.

After this film, will be a project with director Ponram (Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam fame).

Good luck Siva!
