TALVAR MOVIE REVIEW

The background score by Vishal Bhardwaj never draws attention to itself, which is quite an achievement. The songs too merge well with the visuals and act as narrative devices. It is a welcome relief that the movie has no patience for the song and dance routine.

We all know the story as we have read it in the media. The new film, Talvar, based on the Aarushi murder case, portrays the investigation – first by the police and then the fictitious Central Department of Intelligence – into the double murder case. The film also comes down heavily on the media for its unethical coverage. It also seeks to end the movie without much of a closure and raises doubts about the conviction of the parents in the murder. All the names including that of the principal characters have been changed and the movie begins with a statement that this is a fictional account only inspired by true events.
Vishal Bharadwaj’s script is watertight and Meghna Gulzar’s direction is sure handed. She presents contrasting versions of the story – there are three in all – but the sympathy of both the big names in the Hindi film industry is with the parents. The movie is presented as a true blue crime thriller. The first half of the movie promises a lot, some of which is reneged in the second half, especially for those seeking closure in the case.
As usual, Irrfan Khan’s performance is top-notch as the CDI investigating officer Ashwin Kumar. He brings a whole new set of mannerisms to the role and essays it to perfection. That his character is a mobile game addict reveals an interesting dimension to his character. Konkona Sen Sharma is Nutan Tandon and though she plays only a supporting role, she does it without a single flaw. Neeraj Kabi is also very good as Ramesh Tandon. Credit should be given to Meghna for eliciting such powerful performances.
Some may see the movie as acting as a petition for the innocence of the Talwars. Though all the contrasting versions are presented without prejudice, it is clear which version the filmmakers bought.
The background score by Vishal Bhardwaj never draws attention to itself, which is quite an achievement. The songs too merge well with the visuals and act as narrative devices. It is a welcome relief that the movie has no patience for the song and dance routine.
Verdict: If crime thrillers are your passion, you should definitely go and watch this one.
