Interview Team : Kaushik L M
Behindwoods Tamil Cinema Progressive is a new initiative to recognize and laud individuals who have associated themselves with gutsy new-wave cinema with an eye on taking Tamil cinema forward.

Studio Green is a production house which is synonymous with grand commercial entertainers with the brothers, Surya and Karthi, in the lead. They have also shown their eye for different, out-of-the-box ideas by associating with interesting films such as Attakathi, Soodhu Kavvum and Villa. Studio Green's aggressive marketing and distribution techniques played a big role in ensuring the success of these small budget films.

In a chat with Behindwoods as part of our “Tamil Cinema Progressive” initiative, S.R.Prabhu of Studio Green talks about his firm and their modus-operandi.

Your company's mission and vision statement

We are open to do all kinds of films and any type of script.

How does your team go about the process of selecting a new film to distribute?

First of all, we should be satisfied with the film as an audience. It should have the ability to win over all the classes. We don’t expect extraordinary business from each film but the investment should be justified and shouldn’t be harmed.

There are a lot of other factors which go into our decision to distribute a film.

The film’s title, its posters, the first look trailers etc should be impressive. Its production cost should be controlled. Each film has a specific scope for business and the production cost shouldn't overshoot so that its business prospects aren’t adversely impacted.

The film should have good promotional value in the form of interesting songs, catchy dialogs and suchlike. The producers must have a clean background and a proper backing so that needless issues can be avoided.

Like this a lot of factors are involved. We are always looking out for more films.

Will you consider heroes other than Suriya and Karthi for your production ventures?

We are always on the lookout for personalities other than Suriya and Karthi too, when considering production. We have a few ideas with new teams in the pipeline and will announce them once things fall in place.

Does the company fear the failure of a project?

Fear of failure and insecurities are common and such feelings are there before every film. For certain films such as Naan Mahaan Alla and Siruthai, we felt very confident ahead of the film’s release. But for all films, such confidence isn’t naturally possible.

What would you do if a film doesn’t turn out or perform as expected?

If a film of ours doesn’t work out as expected, we do a proper analysis on what didn’t work in the film. It is a business that we are running, we make many films and analysis of what worked and what didn’t, is very important.

How important is a team's previous track record and experience, when you decide to associate with that particular team?

Track record and experience of our crew is very important and plays a vital role. Cinema is a team effort and it is vital that everyone plays his/her part well. So we make sure that we rope in only people with good credentials.

What change would you like to bring about or see in the industry?

We wish to see more professionalism in the industry. Work ethics and attitude need to improve all over the chain, starting from producers to distributors to all the people who exploit a film’s rights.
