KOMBAN SONGS REVIEW

The album begins with a lively folk number rich in indigenous trumpets, thumping rhythm and great energy levels by the vocalists. The timely usage of nadaswaram is another asset for this track with great vigor and commendable fun elements.  The changeover in the tempo as the track progresses takes the listener to varying shades of rustic music. 

In contrast to the paced up beginnings, it is time for a laid back melody sung brilliantly by Shreya Ghoshal. Gripping rhythm section and neat bass work leads to a feel good presentation of relaxed tune. However, it is the ghatam and timely flute which makes its presence felt throughout its progress.  The usage of Far East flute with thavil in the interludes is another good attempt.

An interesting duet arrives with impressive pace and rustic feel in terms of the raw vocals of Velmurugan. The conventional folk rhythm paves the way for nadaswaram and brilliant usage of electric guitar riffs as the base. The peculiar chord progression is another asset for the track. Malavika Sundar’s lower octave rendition in the first interlude is a highlight.

The album travels to an emotional mode with an eerie solo sung by the earthly voiced Madhu Balakrishnan. The breeziness, usage of ghatam and mild treble in the midst of grand piano does the job perfectly. The interludes are essentially classy with the usage of amazing fusion of flute in the midst of Kanjira rhythm. 

A festive instrumental version of Kambikara Vetti where the folk rhythm section converges impressively with paced up chorus. The rhythm is typically folk styled with great energy and the feisty nadaswaram lead takes the track forward.
