One of the best political dramas
in Indian cinema. It has to be,
because there has been no other
attempt to so comprehensively
chart the political history of
Tamil Nadu, from the 1950s to
the late 80s and the death of
the legendary MGR. It is perhaps,
one of the best movies along with
Anbay Sivam, to have not become
a hit. But it is regarded as amongst
Mani Ratnam’s best films.
Rarely has anyone shown enough
courage to portray so explicitly
all facets of three of Tamil Nadu’s
most iconic figures. The brilliance
of two great actors, Mohanlal
and Prakash Raj, lit up many scenes
and Rahman’s music added
to the impact. If ever there was
a political movie in Tamil, this
is it.
