The one whose vision is translated
onto screen, a good debut
is all the more important
for such a high profile and
responsible job.
No prizes for guessing the
winner for the best directorial
debut of 2008, it is Sasikumar
for a cracker of a film in
Subramaniapuram. We don’t
have to say more about the
man or the film, it was one
of the most memorable debuts
of recent times. Mani Ratnam’s
assistant did not let his
mentor’s reputation
fall: Kannan with Jayam Kondaan.
Then there was Jawahar who
made a quite and no frills
debut with the sedate Yaradi
Nee Mohini, deft handling
of a neat script.
Other impressive debuts include
Saravanan, who delivered a
well-balanced commercial with
Silambaattam, Raju Eshwaran
and Krishnan Seshadri Gomatam,
both of whom dared to tread
the rarely explored tracks
with Panjamirtham and Mudhal
Mudhal Mudhal Varai respectively.
Viji graduated from dialogues
to direction with Vellithirai,
which was decent, while Adhi
and Neelan K Shekhar made
their own small marks with
Silandhi and Alibaba.
