Suhasini Maniratnam decided to deal with the sensitive subjects of untouchability and women empowerment with her directorial debut. Though this movie could not grab enough commercial success, the message seemed to have been received with wide-open arms. As a result, Indira was screened in various film festivals across the world thereby propagating the noble cause of eradicating social evils such as untouchability from the society.
