Mani ratnam's 10 biggest
contributions |
|
|
|
|
|
Mani’s
movies have been always acclaimed for their
technical finesse and cinematography in all
his movies has been path breaking, to say
the least.
P C Sriram
P C Sriram, known to Industry circles as PC,
began his association with Mani with the film
Mouna Ragam and immediately was noticed for
his use of natural lighting and tones to blend
with the moods of the characters. This association
got stronger with films like Nayagan, which
won him the National Award for his work behind
the lens, later followed by Agni Natchathiram,
Thiruda Thiruda and Alaipayuthey.
Santosh Sivan
For the Rajinikanth-Mammooty starrer Thalapathy,
Mani sought the services of the then up and
coming cinematographer Santosh Sivan, whose
work in this film was noticed all over the
country and their association continued in
several projects like Roja, Iruvar and Dil
Se. |

Rajeev
Menon
Renowned Ad filmmaker Rajeev Menon got his break
into films when Mani invited him to work in the
film Bombay. His picture post card visuals in
the film were appreciated by critics across the
country. Mani’s last venture Guru was handled
by Rajeev.
Ravi K Chandran
Mani then went on to work with Ravi K Chandran,
who was an already famous cinematographer for
his work in films like Kandukondain Kandukondain
and Dil Chahta Hai, in his critically acclaimed
Kannathil Muthamittal and then his bi-lingual
Ayutha Ezhuthu (Yuva in Hindi). Both these films
brought a different flavor to Ravi’s visuals.
Jeeva
Not many would have guessed that it was Mani who
gave this late cinematographer a break by giving
him the opportunity to shoot the stills for Bombay.
The shots of Arvind Swamy and Manisha Koirala
with the Gateway of India as the backdrop still
remains etched in people’s minds. He had
already worked as a cinematographer in a few films
but acceded to Mani sir’s request purely
out of fascination for the director.
It wouldn’t be an understatement to say
that Mani clearly brought out the best from each
of these great lens-men. |
