This
is one movie that ‘raised the bar’ for
film makers of not just Tamil, but entire South India.
The first word that comes to mind when one thinks
of Paruthiveeran is ‘perfection’. You
can search for flaws in the movie for as long as you
like and still find none. The film took more than
two years in the making and that shows in every frame.
Director Ameer seems to have given tremendous amount
of thought to each scene in the movie. The stand out
aspect of the movie is the casting; Ameer has proved
that you don’t need big names to pull off good
performances. Future directors are sure to take a
leaf out of Ameer’s book. But the single biggest
positive is the dream debut of a prodigious talent,
Karthi. He must be the find of the decade.
Did it escape your notice that there was not a single
movie in the list that featured a real big star, barring
Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (but that was a director’s
movie) The Vijays, Ajiths, Vikrams and Suryas are
missing. Does this suggest that the star system is
facing a threat in Tamil cinema? Well, maybe we will
be able to tell you more on that in 2008.
