Lady directors and debut movies seem to be a very lethal combination.
If Aparna Sen managed the Swarna Kamal with her debut, Mira Nair
went even further. Her debut film, Salaam Bombay in 1988 was nominated
for the Oscars in the Best Foreign language film category and
is considered a timeless classic, must see for every keen follower
of good cinema. She also made a movie titled Misisippi Masala
starring Denzel Washington. Her first shot at commercial cinema
came in 2001 with Monsoon Wedding (everyone would have heard of
that) which did not do too badly besides garnering the positive
critic response. Her latest film The Namesake starring Tabu was
also hailed as a classic and met with commercial classic. She
received the prestigious Darmouth Film Award for The Namesake.
She is currently planning a movie titled Shantharam which might
in all probability star Johnny Depp. Now, how big will that be.
