She debuted in 1991 with a film titled Sam and Me. But she is
perhaps best known for her trilogy Fire, Earth and Water. The
first of the three nearly shook the entire country because of
its controversial content and certain scenes and dialogues that
seemingly hurt religious sentiment. That did not deter her from
going on to deal with another controversial topic, the partition
of India with 1947: Earth which had Aamir Khan and Nandita Das
in the lead which missed making it to the final round at the Oscars.
But she did get there with Water which had to be filmed in Canada
because of problems in India. So India’s loss became Canada’s
gain.
