Maddy is a Kutty Kamal

Three from the Vettai cast; Arya, Madhavan and Amala Paul met and interacted with the winners of the Behindwoods contest at the Devi Sridevi Theater in Chennai on Pongal day. The stars entered during the intermission of the film and had a fun filled humorous interaction with the winners. The audience were also in a very cheerful festive mood blending in with the festive occasion and with the very colourful sprightly nature of the movie.

The winners were visibly thrilled on seeing a mass entertainer starring Maddy after quite a few years. The reason behind the energy and humor on the screen was evident as the same camaraderie was seen between Arya and Maddy throughout the event. Both of them were quite forthcoming with a lot of self-deprecating humor and also never shied away from sportingly pulling each other’s leg also. As Maddy made it clear at the start of the interaction, nothing that was going to be said was serious; it was all going to be a fun affair for a festival occasion.

Most people wanted to know whether Maddy was really someone as timid as Inspector Thirumurthy in Vettai; they thought that he looked very strong in person. All such questions were answered in characteristically glib fashion by Maddy, with Arya chipping in with wisecracks now and then. Some wanted to know whether Maddy really worked out, as shown in the response. The response was that the workout and the resulting muscles were all ‘graphics’ work. Also, the reference to the famous ‘shutter’ scene from Run drew a lot of applause.

There was also a question or two about the emergence of multi-starrers in a big way this Pongal. To this Maddy said that multi-starrers were not emerging but were being revived and that it was a common practice in the 70s and 80s. Arya said that multi-starrers had been an integral part of his career and that all of them had done well.

Some youngsters wanted to know the secret behind Amala Paul’s glowing skin; one in the audience hinted at Fair and Lovely and there was a lot of laughter.

On a slightly more serious note, when asked about the experience of working with Madhavan, Arya said that it was a learning experience for him and Amala Paul to work with such an experienced artiste and that Lingusamy refers to Madhavan as Kutty Kamal.

A member of the audience also raised a question about Madhavan’s forthcoming Hollywood project titled ‘The Man Who Knew Infinity’; a biopic of Srinivas Ramanujam. Madhavan elaborated that the script had been written by a person over a period of three years from Ramanujam’s ancestral home in Kumbakonam, which he had also visited during Vettai’s shooting schedule.

After the interaction, all three stars posed for photographs with all the winners and patiently signed autographs. It was a perfect Pongal for all the lucky winners of the Behindwoods Vettai contest. Producer UTV Dhananjayan later said that Vettai was gaining positive response from all quarters and thanked the audience for the success.
