A few days ago, an athlete made our nation proud by bagging the first Gold medal for India in the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships held in Doha, Qatar. Yes, you have got it right! She is none other than our very own Gomathi Marimuthu who hails from an agricultural dependent poor family from a village, Mudikandam near Trichy.
Aged 30, she won the Gold medal in the 800 meters running race with a career-best timing of 2:02:07 minutes in the 23rd edition of the Asian Athletics Championships. She was well-appreciated and praised for her hard work and determination who crossed all her economic barriers and followed her passion.
On her remarkable feat, she was congratulated by many celebrities and politicians including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the leader of opposition M.K.Stalin and many others. Adding to this, Robo Shankar, a well-known comedy actor has gifted the champion a cash prize of Rs 1 Lakh for her outstanding performance. While he announced the prize, he had also said that he understands the plight of Gomathi as he also comes from a weak economic background and further added that it’s a huge achievement, she had worked hard and succeeded despite losing her father and not losing her confidence.
