Trisha Illana Nayanthara is emerging as one of the most talked about films in recent times. While the boys section of the crowd is loving it, there have been comments from the ladies side that the film was offensive and misogynistic. We had a chat with director Adhik Ravichandran, the man who has churned out the current talk of the town.
"Very few ladies saw the film on Day 1, frankly. Majorly, guys have gone to theaters. The few ladies in my circle who saw the film didn't find it that offensive and felt that it was enjoyable and within tolerable limits. We didn't deliberately target women, and the film is just a virgin boy's perspective. We filmed what is happening currently and have filtered out a lot of things naturally.
But I have to say that I was shocked to see families in theaters. There are films which are specifically targeted at families but for my film I'll say 'please do not come to theaters with your families'. The film is clearly one-sided and is targeted at young men. We didn't want to mislead with gimmicks and make the film accessible to the families, by cutting fake trailers and teasers. Our promos were clear in their communication about the film and we settled for an 'A' certificate happily. Audiences can't be cheated, and it will backfire badly if we try to."
The film has meanwhile taken a thunderous opening at the box-office, and Adhik is thrilled,
"It is a massive opening for a film which was made at a budget of just around 4 crores including marketing and promotions. In a theater in Karaikal, many people were standing and seeing the film for reduced ticket rates. There is a noticeable increase in the screen count thanks to the huge ticket pressure. The actual scenario will emerge after the weekend but it is a great opening."
