A R RAHMAN WALKS OUT ABRUPTLY AND THEN SUDDENLY ...

Recently A R Rahman had conducted his “Intimate Concert” at various locations in USA. Reports state that the audience at the Intimate Concert was thrilled to experience an electrifying atmosphere. An account of the same here:

 

 

The Mozart of Madras was introduced with a brilliant video casting him and the directors/musicians he worked with, and their experiences. Rahman opened the concert with Maula Mere Maula from Dilli 6 which was followed by Choti Se Asha / China China Aasai from Roja where he sang the mesmerizing Yelelo chorus part. It was interesting to hear his tidbits associated with the songs being performed. After the song Uyire / Tu Hi Rey from Bombay, Rahman said that many people have fallen in love after listening to this song and one famous couple was actress Sridevi and Boney Kapoor.

 

The Smoke effects, lighting, background dancers and the graphics on the stage blended well with each song and elevated the experience to another level. Singers Jonita Gandhi and Haricharan Seshadri rocked when rendering a famous number Naane Varugiren from Isai Puyal’s recent album OK Kanmani. Every move of Rahman onstage was applauded.

 

Rahman’s collaboration with ‘Intel Real Sense Software’, for the rendition of Thee Thee Thithikum Thee proved his passion for embracing technology. This was truly in the future as Rahman and Ranjith played musical instruments with hand and leg gestures in thin air. As they played the music, Jonita sang the song, Ranjith sang the Jathi, the dancers danced in sync and this ended with a thunderous applause.

 

There were a lot of other Tamil and Hindi songs performed from his famous albums. Finally 'Isai Puyal' threw a surprise to all audiences by saying he needs to finish the concert and left abruptly. The credits started to appear on the screen with Vande Mataram song in the background. Everyone was baffled as to whether the concert really ended, and started leaving the hall.

 

Then, within a few minutes, the concert hall went dark to a roaring applause and the focus light came on the piano. Suddenly we could hear Rahman’s voice inviting people to take selfies with him. This move was nothing short of dramatic and got the adrenaline pumping even more. All of a sudden, there was a tsunami of people standing next to the podium trying to take selfies with him. Then he sang the Oscar winning Jai Ho followed by Mental Manathil. He started giving hi-fives to the audience as he was singing.

 

True to the name of the concert, the 'Mozart of Madras' made sure that it was intimate and a surreal experience for the audience. When it all ended, he surely left the audience wanting more and with a sense of appreciation for his body of work.
