In
an industry where crores are dumped to make a
film, it is the hero that takes away a lion's
share. Almost 40% of the production cost goes
towards paying the hero. In this article we analyze
how much our Kodambakkam heroes are paid and whether
they are worth the crores they are paid.
Some heroes are paid in crores and some are paid
in lakhs. Those that get more than one crore come
in the top ranks of heroes. Let us take the Kodambakkam
heroes and see how they are riding the entertainment

Rajinikanth
:
He is no doubt the numero uno of the Tamil
film industry. Little did Shivaji Rao Gaekwad
imagine way back that one day he, as Rajinikanth
would command crores of rupees as his fee.
Guess how much is the current salary of
superstar for a movie? 25 crores! In fact,
that is a small amount by Rajini standards.
When Shivaji Productions made Chandramukhi,
they asked him how much he would like to
be paid. Rajini politely replied “that’s
not a matter and we’ll look at that
afterwards!” Beating everyone's imagination,
the movie did a whopping 90 + crore business.
They wanted to pay him upto 25 crore but
Rajini said 10 would suffice. That is Rajini
style. He had given word to the Shivaji
family that he would do a movie for them
purely to help out the thespian’s
family. Rajini is now helping AVM company
which had continuously been seeing losses
after Vikram’s Gemini. Trade analysts
say that Sivaji can do better business than
Chandramukhi but Rajini has made up his
mind that his fee would stand at 10 crores
alone. But, a latest report states that
he has charged 16 crores as fees for Sivaji!! |

Kamal
Hassan :
This versatile genius is the next highest
paid artiste though the money he gets can
never match up to the superstar's. Unlike
Rajini or Vijay, Kamal doesn't get paid
on the spot. His movies take time to do
business. Business wise Rajini's movies
may be a safe bet but they don't raise expectations
as Kamal's movies do. This maverick's movies
fall into two categories—hits or flops,
never the mediocre ones. If Virumaandi was
a big hit, Mumbai Express was a flop. The
money that Kamal is paid is not for the
business they make but for the talent, maturity
and savvy he brings. For his next venture
Dasavataram the actor seems to get 6 crores
as salary. |

Vijay
:
This young hero is the third highest paid
actor with a tag of 5 crores. Like Rajini's
movies, his flicks make brisk business.
In the beginning of 2005 his rate was only
three and a half crores but the success
of Tirupaachi and Sivakasi has changed that.
If he manages to pull off a few more hits,
he will cross the 5 crore mark. His father
S A Chandrasekhar manages his affairs and
everyone knows that papa knows how a business
is transacted. Swargachitra’s Appachhan
is ready to pay upto eight crores to this
guy for his next venture. |

Vikram
:
This late starter is perhaps the second
most popular hero, next to Rajini but then
his fee is only somewhere between 3 to 4
crores. Why? Vikram has seen hard times
and the way up has not been a pleasant ride.
He knows the difficulties of the producers
and doesn't pitch more than the amount that
producers can afford. The producers are
willing to shell out 4 crores but the hero
doesn't want them to pay through their noses.
He was paid 3 crore for his Maja. For Pitaamagan
he signed up for a mere 1 crore out of which
he did not collect 25 per cent of the agreed
amount to avoid embarrassment to his friend
Bala. But, trade sources say that for Bheema
the actor is to receive more than 4 crores
as salary. |

Ajith
:
Luck has not been favorable to Ajith. The
last two years he has been languishing.
A hero who once ran neck and neck with Vijay
is today way behind. From 2 crores his rate
had come down to one crore. That is what
he got paid for Paramasivan and Tirupathi.
If he manages to pull off a hit with Godfather,
he may revert to 2 crores and more. But
then, the initial reports about Tirupathi
are not that encouraging. |

Surya
:
The turning point for this artiste came
with Kaakka Kaakka. His rate shot up from
35 lakhs to one crore. He was paid one and
a half crores for Gajini and Aaru. It is
expected that with a couple of hits, this
guy would touch the 2 crore mark. Like Vikram's,
Surya's market has seen a steady growth. |
