"VEETLA AMMA MUKKIYAM SCHOOL LA TEACHER MUKKIYAM MATHA EDATHULA ELLAM FRIENDS DHAN MUKKIYAM"

Interview Team : Thanveer; Ashok Kumar; Jyothsna; Venkat

A conversation with a person who has just stepped into the ocean, that is cinema, is always insightful. True to that notion, my conversation with actor Raj Bharath who has played the lead role in the latest film Natpadhigaram 79 after an acclaimed performance in director Mysskin’s Onayum Aatukuttiyum was very sensible, emotional and threw light upon his dive into the realms of cinema.

It certainly must have been an insightful learning experience for you while working with director Mysskin. Share those experiences with us:

Working with big directors like Mysskin and Ravichandran so early on in my career is a great blessing. While working with Mysskin sir, he always emphasised that one has to act through his eyes.  “You need to convey any and every emotion through your eyes. Everything else is a distraction.” He used to tell me. It is still deeply etched in my mind. I took that lesson to heart even while working for Natpadhigaram 79.

You need to convey any and every emotion through your eyes. Everything else is a distraction.

Natpadhigaram 79. What can we look forward to in this movie?

Natpadhigaram 79 is a simple, straightforward, emotional drama. It's about friendship and family relationships told in a contemporary way. Though the film might have a linear and a predictable plot, the scenes will be pleasing and appealing to the youngsters of the current generation. People who watch the film will be able to relate to the scenes. One might surely have experienced the events the film talks about in their life. That emotional connect will be there. And it has been told in a practical and realistic manner.

Director Ravichandran who is also your uncle has made this movie after a long gap. How did the idea for this movie come up?

I did a villain’s role called Thamba in Onaayum Aatukuttiyum. After watching my performance in the film he was convinced to make a movie with me as one of the leads. Though he could have launched me as an actor earlier, he needed me to learn the art of acting by doing other movies. And after Onaayum Aatukuttiyum he was convinced and decided to make a movie with me. I was actually playing the lead role in the movie Andhra Mess when the pre-production for this film started. While Andhra Mess shooting was still going on, I worked parallel on the pre-production for this movie as an assistant director. Right from the scripting process I’ve been involved with this movie so as soon as Andhra mess got over we started this movie. In Onayum Aatukuttiyum, I had to play an eccentric character throughout but in the case of Natpadhigaram my role is a very rugged, very rigid and at the same time very subtle character. It was very challenging for me since I had to maintain that subtle character and at the same time not lose my expressiveness.

What was it like working with Reshmi Menon, Tejaswi Madivada and Amjad khan. Describe your off screen relationship with them:

Amjad khan of Vallinam fame has also played another lead role in this film. Reshmi Menon is famous and she has played the pair to Amjad. It’s Tejaswini’s debut to Tamil cinema. She has played the role of my pair. Since it's a friendship story, off screen relationship being friendly is a must to portray the bonding on screen.  Before shooting work started when we met, we really gelled together. So we were able to develop a bonding off screen as well. Since we were friends off screen as well, I am hundred percent sure the friendship in the movie also will be real for people watching it. Most of the song sequences were shot candidly. Many of the scenes weren’t choreographed. We shot candidly and made the most of the footage that we collected. So if not for our off screen bonding, all this wouldn’t have been possible and I’m confident that it has come out well on screen as well.

Your father Malliyam Rajagopal is a veteran director. What is the most important lesson he has left with you?

My father is my greatest inspiration to enter cinema. He is the only inspiration in fact. I had the desire and passion to enter cinema but the inspiration is him. I got to know more about him only after I started meeting directors. They have huge respect for him. The first thing they would talk to me is about my father. That respect the industry has for him is what inspired me most. My main motive for entering the industry is to establish myself and be known as  Malliyam Rajagopal’s son. I met with Sivakumar uncle to show him my movie and get his blessings. He gave me a small byte where he talked about my dad. I was really moved emotionally with what he had to say. I told Sivakumar uncle that he made me forget the fact that my dad is no more. He on his part told me that he could feel the vibrations of my dad through me. I don’t know what but there was a certain positive vibe when I met him which I will never forget in my life. I must also thank Suriya sir whom I met in Singam 3 shooting spot. It was very encouraging. I don't have words to thank both of them for making it such a memorable experience.

My main motive for entering the industry is to establish myself and be known as  Malliyam Rajagopal’s son.

Tell us about your relationship with Murali Vijay:

Murali vijay is my childhood friend. Right from childhood I’ve been playing cricket with him. I continued playing cricket till college after I had to change track. Even though he is busy currently with practice for IPL, he took time to come and watch my movie. He was completely impressed and gave a small byte.

I've played cricket with Murali Vijay since childhood.

Future plans.

I’m completely focused on acting as of now. Ultimate aim is to become a director but right now I’m focused on acting. Working as an assistant director was a learning experience for me. Every actor in my opinion needs to be on the other side of the production too. It’s a very essential learning experience. My next movie is Sigai in which I’m playing a negative role. Many people discouraged me for choosing a negative role after doing a lead role in Natpadhigaram. But personally I aspire to do varying characters in my movies. I wanted to break the popular notion that an actor has to continue in the same path after doing a lead role. They are planning to send Sigai for film festivals and I am confident it will be received well.

Your personal message on Friendship. It could even be a punch line from the movie:

வீட்டுல அம்மா முக்கியம், ஸ்கூல்ல டீச்சர் முக்கியம், மத்த எடத்துல எல்லாம் ஃப்ரெண்ட்ஸ்தான் முக்கியம்

(“ Veetla amma mukkiyam, School la teacher mukkiyam, matha edathula ellam friends than mukiyam.”)
