“Sometimes poetry can give a few glimpses of the unknown”- Osho. Same holds true for movies as well. With this context, was wondering why Tamil movies are failing to give us hypnotic and transporting moments in a consistent manner in 150 minutes of their life span in theatre. Most of the creators in Tamil cinema are of the view that challenge arises from audience acceptance.
I hope you will agree with me when I say - in the last 10-12 years, we have found Bala who has broken this myth with his creations along with box office success (am saying this for pundits who believe box office is everything in life!!). The audience was the same and they definitely appreciate his creations with silence and conviction. Feel it is mainly to do with his creations giving us the transporting moments which we were looking for.
With original plots (no inspiration!!) those moments are created and it can be attributed to characters, dialogues, acting, silence, music etc. In fact, the movie resides in you for some time (can be days also). More importantly, every time you watch it – it opens up a new layer of understanding. Feel his movies belong to the category where it also allows the internal self to grow. This is the great celebration for all the other creators and audiences without any doubt.
Personally feel his creations are unfortunately stuck within Tamil boundaries and needs a strategic push to reach global audience. This is not for commercial reasons but more for sharing some of our best works to the world. I am sure some of his films can be good brand ambassador for the world cinema similar to Iranian and Japanese films which created a genre of its own. Filmmakers here may need to plan for this exercise from day one itself …all said and done good work/film also needs to be positioned to reach the global audience.
I am hoping that the world soon starts noticing this Maverick creator’s work and also recognizes the same for betterment of the World cinema.
Best Wishes Bala. Hoping to look for those transporting moments in your films.
