PORIYAALAN MOVIE REVIEW

Being a successful engineer is never easy and when you are an ambitious one at that, the struggles ahead of you are plenty. Poriyaalan is the struggle of an ambitious civil engineer who quits his regular job as an assistant engineer, with the hope to begin a new construction firm, but falls prey to a land scam and a greedy goon. 

 

Directed by new comer Thanukumar, the film is a joint production venture of Vetrimaaran’s Grassroot film company and Ace Maas Medias. Manimaran of Udhayam NH4 fame has written the story, screenplay and dialogues.

 

The leads Harish Kalyan and Rakshita have delivered very subtle performances in most part of the movie. However, for a newcomer, the intro song could have been avoided. Veteran Mohan Raman’s portrayal of Shastri standout as the best in the film and the other supporting casts have done well enough to keep the story moving.

 

Despite a serious lip sync issue in the movie, the story, though not out of the box, is tight and manages to keep the audiences engaged in the second half. The romance sequences and the stereotypic ‘heroine pestering the hero with love calls at the moments of emergencies’ could have been avoided, as they seemed to drop the pace of the film immensely.

 

Other drawbacks would be the production quality and music. The songs are underwhelming and the exhaustive background music doesn’t help much. 

 

Although the shot divisions and frames appear to be well done, one might get the feeling that the visual quality in a few sequences could have been better. The guerilla shots and few other outdoor sequences appear to be in a handy-cam quality. 

 

All that said, Poriyaalan has a fairly gripping story, with a commendable, but crisp performance from Mohan Raman.
