OPENINGS IN APRIL AND MAY

Seventeen films released during the summer holiday season. How did they fare at the box office? Well, we are not here to tell you that. But, we are looking at how well they opened. A good opening is an indicator of the star power of the film’s lead actors, the brand value of the team involved and the publicity undertaken before the release. So, how did these factors combine to decide the way films opened?

The classification here is based on the collections of a film at the Chennai box office in the first three days of its theatrical run i.e. Friday-Sunday. Please note that these are just figures of the opening 3 days and therefore are not indicators of the film’s overall performance at the box office.
1 - 5 lakhs
Sivappu Mazhai - Rs. 1.8 lakhs

Kadhalagi - Rs. 3.05 lakhs

Bayam Ariyaan - Rs. 3.1 lakhs

Kattradhu Kalavu - Rs. 3.1 lakhs

In the 1-5 lakhs bracket, there are four films and not surprisingly, they were low profile releases not boasting of huge star value or production banners. Consequently, their opening at the box office was quite modest. Joachim Suresh’s attempt at creating yet another world record; Sivappu Mazhai, could not exactly rain cash at the box office, but walked away with decent opinions. Meanwhile, two releases on the same day Kadhalagi and Kattradhu Kalavu; both moving along a bit unconventional lines met with almost similar responses during the opening weekend. And, Bayam Ariyaan, a low budget flick with Kishore in an important role, also falls in the 1-5 lakh zone.
