Prakash Raj’s Muthupandi
from Ghilli could have definitely benefited
from a copy of “The Complete Idiot’s
Guide to Romance” . Muthupandi falls
in love with Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) and wants
her in the worst way. So he goes about wooing
her in the worst possible way. He proceeds
to murder her beloved brothers and embarks
on a reign of terror as far as his lady love
is concerned chasing her across the state
with a gang of goondas and holding her parents
captive.
Muthupandi may have been as tough as they
come but he also had a tender side, in a manner
of speaking. In a hilarious scene where he
tries to articulate his ardent feelings for
her, Muthupandi thinks it is perfectly appropriate
to mention that he has ravished many a maiden
who had the misfortune to catch his roving
eye and adds that she did not get the same
treatment because he loved her and she was
his Chellam! Obviously the tenderness in this
monologue is lost on Dhanalakshmi who proceeds
to weep hysterically. Needless to say Muthupandi
certainly knew how to mess up in love.
