PRE-INDEPENDENCE CINEMA

With Madharasapattinam having released, many other films that have been set in the pre-independence era come to mind. What strikes us most about these films is that almost all of them have been engaging in one way or the other; not essentially commercial successes. The pre-independence flicks have an almost 100% satisfaction rate. Here, we look at some of the best Tamil films that have been set in the pre-independence era and we hope that in due course, Madharasapattinam too will earn its place on this list. The movies featured in this list sample the contemporary ones released over the past two decades only.
Siraisalai
Siraisalai
This film chose to focus on one of the lesser known aspects of the freedom struggle; the treatment meted out to the freedom fighters who were prisoners at the Cellular Jail on the Andaman Islands. The film was a rough and realistic portrayal of the atrocities committed by the colonial power. The only downside was that it perhaps failed to successfully coordinate with the events of the actual freedom struggle on the Indian mainland. Remembered mostly for being one of the only films to be shot extensively in the Cellular Jail and for some powerful performances.
