This was a view of the freedom struggle through the eyes of man who was confused, not knowing whether to fight for his country or community. In the end he realizes that there is nothing bigger than one’s country. Widely believed to be one of Kamal Haasan’s masterpieces, the film focuses on the intense communal tensions that existed in India during the final years of the freedom struggle that ultimately lead to the painful partition that continues to hurt us even 60 years later.
