THE BEST MONTAGES OF 2011

Putting well composed songs into pictures and inserting them into movies is one of the most difficult things, especially when you don’t use fancy locations, costumes and dancers. Montages can be a challenge for the actors, directors and editors. Putting together a coherent montage which says things very essential to the story, establishing premises and taking things forward, all within a song, is an art unto itself. The practice of montages seems to be getting more and more popular these days with most directors preferring it to the traditional song-dance routine. So, here we are; the best montages of 2011.

Yaaradhu – Kaavalan
A cute romantic song; the hero’s search for his love through phone conversations. The song has been picturised in way that takes us through the slow growth of the involvement of Vijay’s character in the romance. But, it is not a mushy or sugary affair; it is laced with humour and that’s what makes this song special. There is absolutely nothing fancy. It’s all shot within the normal everyday surroundings of the characters, yet advances the story significantly and firmly establishes the nature of the relationship. It was nice to see Vijay in a breezy and romantic mood, without any heroic airs, after quite a long time.
