Mani
Ratnam was starting to be looked upon as a political
director after his path-breaking hits - Roja and Bombay.
Just after the latter’s divisive smash hit,
came one of his biggest attempts till date, Iruvar.
It's much guarded secret story line about life portrayal
of the political bigwigs - M.G.R, M.Karunanidhi and
Jayalalitha created super expectations. Election time,
a great star cast, Rahman’s time-adapted music
and some stunning visual promos, added fuel to the
already destructively burning fire of expectations.
Maybe the movie was too ahead of its time, may be
the story was too known for a common Tamil or perhaps
the narrative pace was not of Mani’s expected
standards. Seldom do you come across people who didn’t
like the movie after seeing it the second time, in
the comforts of their homes – a mystery to be
solved?
