One of actor Vijay's memorable films as lead is the 2003 Tamil action film Thirumalai, which starred Jyothika as the female lead while Manoj K. Jayan and Vivekh played the antagonist and comic relief respectively.
The film was memorable for Vijay's fiery performance and style factor. In a special interview to Behindwoods, director Ramana, who had helmed Vijay in Thirumalai and Adhi spoke about the making process of Thirumalai, a film that is considered to be the actor's most definitive works in his formidable years.
When asked about the idea that went behind the iconic cigarette flick mannerism that was showcased by Vijay in the film, he said "I was a terrible student in college with twenty-four FIR's under my name and was known to be a violent person in college. I used to stash beedis in my right folded sleeve and used to carry matchsticks in my left sleeve. I just wanted to used the style in a different manner for my films."
Regarding the famous punchline from the film- 'Vaazhka oru vattam, inga jeikiravan thoappan, thoakkuravan jeippan' (life is a circle where the loser wins and winner loses), he said "In a circle, there is no end and starting points. There is equal importance to everyone who sits in a roundtable. The world and life, like circles, doesn't have any start and end, it is not just a dialogue but a lifestyle."
When asked about the success behind 'Thaam thakka theem thakka'- the evergreen number that featured an exciting dance duel between Vijay and Raghava Lawrence, he said "The credit goes to Vijay for that" he then added "The song was supposed to feature Vijay and Prabhu Deva sir, but despite his willingness, we couldn't fit in Prabhu sir's dates."
After that, he approached actor and celebrated choreographer Raghava Lawrence master to do the song, but he had was also busy in the shoot of Telugu Megastar Chiranjeevi's film and showed interest in the project. Ramana then went on to approach Chiranjeevi which led to Lawrence master collaborating for the project "After Vijay and Lawrence master, even Chiranjeevi sir is the reason behind the song's success."
