Your approach to cinema…

I want every singly man working on a movie to benefit well out of it. Everyone puts in a fair amount of effort in the making of a movie, and it doesn’t seem fair to me when only one portion of the people get paid humongously and the rest don’t. That’s why I always suggest the makers to involve as many characters in a project and see to it that they all get noticed.

It doesn’t seem fair to me when only one portion of the people get paid humongously and the rest don’t.

Does being selfless really help in your efforts to become a star?

It’s the longer route I’ve taken and I know it. Sometimes I myself have wondered why I am doing it. But I believe I’m doing the right thing.

Sometimes, I do not ask things, like why haven’t you added me in the poster and things like that. At times I wish a couple more shots of mine could’ve been added in the teaser. But, I don’t go around asking my makers these things, because, I believe that it is my duty to push myself forward and to a level, where it becomes mandatory to all the filmmakers to do those things I just mentioned. When I achieve that, I will consider myself successful.

At times I wish a couple more shots of mine could’ve been added in the teaser.

How did you bag Mundasupatti?

I don’t ask for chances. I do express my interests in working with certain people at times, but I do not make it look as if I’m desperate.

I spoke to CV Kumar sir just once and I told him I like his style of movies and that I’d like to work with him sometime if he needs me. That’s all I told him. We both met during a few events after that, but we didn’t talk about it.

At the same time, my friends came across a short film named Mundasupatti and raved about it. They told me the short film was being made into a feature. I watched the short film and wished I’d get to be a part of something like that. The discussion ended there and I moved on with my own work.

After a few days, CV Kumar sir called me and said he has got a script for me. He was also in a hurry to go on floors. So, I asked him for the script. To my surprise, it was Mundasupatti. Why would say no to that?

If you are meant for something, no matter how hard it is to achieve, you will get to it eventually.

If you are meant for something, no matter how hard it is to achieve, you will get to it eventually.

You believe in such stuffs?

Call me crazy or superstitious, but I whole heartedly do. It wasn’t easy for me to crack into the industry. After being a professional cricketer for 10 years, I started putting in efforts to become an actor. For 6 years I struggled. I got no opportunity. Later I decided to take a desk job and I started going to an office. For 20 days I worked in there and the next day I got a call from Suseenthiran sir.

It wasn’t easy for me to crack into the industry.

Kaali Venkat had played the lead role in the original Mundasupatti short film…

Yeah... In fact I’d mockingly ask Kaali if he was jealous of me. He’d say, “Definitely not sir… There was no romance sequence in the original. Imagine me romancing Nandita!”

That said, I cannot take his spot as the lead comedian. That’s a difficult job and you’d accept if I say Kaali’s an expert.

‘Munishkanth’ Ramdoss…

Ramdass had dubbed for Munishkanth earlier in the Short film. He has the most amazing dialect and Munishkanth is the most favorite of all the characters I have seen in my career. I told him I’m his fan on the second day I worked with him. I also told him his character would be a massive hit.

There are few characters that no one else can do justice to, other than that one particular actor. Munishkanth is one such character and Ramdass is that actor.

There are few characters that no one else can do justice to, other than that one particular actor.

How would you want Mundasupatti 2 to be?

I have absolutely no idea and I just can’t think of a story. From my experience, I have learnt that I cannot create things. I am good at modifying things, but it is not in me to create or come up with a new idea. Hence, I keep myself asking the makers what will Mundasupatti 2 be like. Let’s see what happens…

I am good at modifying things, but it is not in me to create or come up with a new idea.

Your better half, Rajini…

She is my biggest and meanest critic. She is also my greatest strength. If at all I’m becoming better with every film of mine, most of the credits go to her.

She is also an aspiring director. She has assisted Seenu Ramasamy in Neer Paravai and Kiruthiga Udhayanidhi in Vanakkam Chennai. She wrote a couple of scripts. But the sad thing is a few films that released recently had similar story lines. So she is working on a different story and will venture into direction very soon.

Rajini is my biggest and meanest critic.

What do you do when you are not working?

There are only three things I do when I’m not working – I spend time with 1) Family, 2) Rajini, 3) friends. I don’t even watch many movies. Apart from these three, I am mad about mobile phones. I keep browsing about new technologies.

Your go-to friends in the industry…

The oldest and the closest are Vishal and Vikranth. Our friendship bloomed during the first season of CCL. Then, I became very close with Udhayanidhi. When we were working on Neer Paravai, he helped Rajini assist Seenu Ramasamy. He also let her work in Vanakkam Chennai.  He is a very genuine person, just like me. Although I haven’t done a single film for him after Neer Paravai, I know he’ll always be there for me when I need.

I also share a good rapport with Jeeva, Arya, Ramana, Shanthanu and Jithan Ramesh.

So that’s my gang. They were all very supportive prior the release of Mundasupatti. Most of them created a ‘My Mundasupatti Style’ Avatar of themselves and posted it online. I was really touched.

They are all top people in the industry and they took time to support me. Vishal and Udhay sent video bytes wishing me luck for the release. In that way, I’ve been really blessed.

Vikranth and myself are looking to work together in a movie. Vishal has agreed to produce that project. We are looking for good scripts.

We are not going to take anything along when we die. I believe people like these make our lives colorful and meaningful.

Although I haven’t done a single film for Udhayanidhi after Neer Paravai, I know he’ll always be there for me when I need.

What’s your take on Vishal’s recent heroic of busting a couple of local channels?

He called me immediately after he was done with those channels. Since my dad is a police officer, he requested me to take care if anything goes wrong. I told him I have his back and asked him to go ahead with it.

It’s really nice of him to take that initiative and that’s really how he is.

Jeeva…

Jeeva is a cricket based movie and it’s very close to my heart. I wanted two things to happen after Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu – one, I wanted to work with Suseenthiran sir again and two, I wanted to do a movie on the sport that’s dear to me, Cricket. Jeeva has given me both.

I can relate myself to the film very much and Jeeva is more or less the collection of events that happened in my life and my friends’ lives.

Jeeva is more or less the collection of events that happened in my life and my friends’ lives.

Are Veera Dheera Sooran and Jeeva one and the same?

No. That’s the common misunderstanding, but they both are two different stories. Suseenthiran sir planned on doing Veera Dheera Sooran (VDS) now, but changed his mind.  It’s a brilliant script. Suseenthiran sir was planning to do it immediately after Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu. We will, very soon.

Idam Porul Eval…

Idam Porul Eval is a multistarrer, featuring myself and Vijay Sethupathi. The character I play is that of a light hearted, innocent man. The story revolves around the lives of two characters and the situation that bring them together.

It’s a proper family drama, with a lot of emotions and it is about the events that change a man completely.

Unlike all other films of Seenu Ramasamy sir, Idam Porul Eval will have more commercial elements, but at the same time, it will have his usual touch.

Unlike all other films of Seenu Ramasamy sir, Idam Porul Eval will have more commercial elements

Vijay Sethupathi in a way is like you… He gives a lot of importance to the content… How was it sharing screen space with a like minded person? Or is it the opposite?

Vijay Sethupathi and I have already worked together in two other films. He did a part in Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu and he also played my brother in Bale Pandiya. We both have been in good touch since then. So, I was happy when I came to know that I’d be sharing screen space with him. We don’t have many sequences together, but it was good working with him.

Your favorite actors…

As a fan, I admire Suriya sir’s works. But obviously Rajini sir is my most favorite. No one can ever replace him.

But Suriya sir is someone who always strives to deliver something different. He has reached a level where, his mere presence will do all the magic. But, he doesn’t take his position for granted and he whole heartedly puts his full self to entertain his fans. That’s what makes him special.

But as an insider, you’ll find each and every artist have something unique about them. They are aware of the struggle that lies beneath the career. My point is, there’s something we admire in special each and everyone one in the industry.

 I admire Suriya sir’s works.

Your favorite movie that you have been a part of…

Neer Paravai will top that list for sure. I think that film will remain on to forever. That film changed me as a person. When I did Neer Paravai, I was particularly expecting something from it. But that didn’t happen and it was very hard to digest. I had put in my heart and soul into it and I didn’t even get a single project for the next six months after its release. I didn’t even know why.

That changed my perspective towards cinema and the people. I started being very straight forward and to my surprise, I got a bunch of very good friends. My life changed after that movie. So it’ll remain on the top of my favorite film.

Secondly it is Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu for obvious reasons. First movie is always special and the friends I got through that film are still close to me.

And lastly, it is Mundasupatti. I’ve never seen any of my movies more than twice, not even in television. But, I’ve seen Mundasupatti thrice, until now.

I don’t think any of my other movies will make it to the favorites list.

I had put in my heart and soul into Neer Paravai and I didn’t even get a single project for the next six months after its release.

The perks of being an actor…

The best part of being an actor is, for one, you get to do something different every single day. Like the pitch changes every day in cricket, it’s a new game ever other day in cinema.

Cinema has also given me incredible experiences which I wouldn’t have got if I had not been an actor. I also get to be a different person every day – one day a fisherman and the next day a photographer from the 80s.

There’s another advantage. A regular office goer works as hard as me, but the returns I get is much more higher that what he gets (laughs).

Jokes apart, there are cons in our business too. We have to put up with the bad reviews and criticisms from the audiences, if our work isn’t up to the mark. Say, I want to spend a quite dinner with my wife at a restaurant, I have to put up with the staring and interruptions. No matter what my mood is or where I’m, it is my duty to attend to the fans, if they come asking for photographs or autographs.

All that said, it is a fun business to be a part of and I’m really happy that I ended up here.

Say, I want to spend a quite dinner with my wife at a restaurant, I have to put up with the staring and interruptions.

The best thing about Tamil cinema and the changes you wish to see…

The best thing obviously is the varieties of films that are coming these days. Now there’s scope for everyone, which is a great sign. The short film contests have changed the way we look at cinema. And the best part, people are equally receptive of these new genres as the commercial mass movies. Producers are also open to new ideas.

On the down side, everything is changing rapidly. By the time, you ascertain the tastes of people and adapt to it, they move on to a different interest. Assume you are planning to do a film and by the time it releases the tastes would have changed. Unless you keep a sharp track of people’s needs, you are doomed.

We wish you great luck Vishnu and may all your dreams come true!

By the time, you ascertain the tastes of people and adapt to it, they move on to a different interest.
