An impeachment inquiry against Donald Trump was initiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on September 24 this year after it was alleged that President Trump had abused his power to pressurize Ukraine president to damage his political rival Joe Biden in 2020 election.
Pelosi told the media on Thursday that "The facts are uncontested. The president abused his power for his own political benefit at the expense of our national security," reports BBC.
"Our democracy is what is at stake, the president leaves us no choice but to act," she said.
"Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders and a heart full of love for America, today I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment," she announced.
"I don't hate anybody, I still pray for the president all the time. So don't mess with me when it comes to words like that!" she said when a reporter asked her if she hated Trump.
Impeachment (charges) is the first part of a two stage political process by which Congress can remove a president from office.
After the hearings, if the House of Representatives vote to pass articles, then Senate will hold a trial. A senate vote requires 2/3 majority. However, in this case, Trump's party holds the majority so it could be unlikely.
In the past, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson were impeached but none was convicted. Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached.
