Though India had topped the table at the ICC World Cup 2019 with just one loss, the semi-final game added with reserve day privileges sent India out of the tournament. More than anything else, the rain had played a very crucial role in the ongoing ICC tournament.
Indian Skipper Virat Kholi said, “45 minutes of bad cricket’ had sent them out of the tournament in spite of performing well in the other games. Reportedly there had been general talks about playing knockout stages in the world cup tournament like an IPL-style ‘playoff’ format.
The top two teams get two chances to reach the finals in the IPL where they have to play ‘Qualifier 1’ to enter directly into the finals. The losing team in ‘Qualifier 1’ will get another chance to compete with the team winning the ‘Eliminator’ (Qualifier 2).
According to the report by News 18, Kohli felt maybe in the future, the ICC will look at introducing playoffs in knockout stages as well. “Who knows in the future. Maybe. If topping the table means anything. I think these things can come into consideration, looking at the magnitude of this tournament. That is a really valid point. You never know when that is going to be implemented,” Kohli said in the post-match press conference in Manchester on Wednesday (July 10).
