Kerala Crime Branch has taken Jolly Joseph and two other suspects who are alleged to have involved in serial killings under custody for seven days.
From 2002 to 2016, six members of a Catholic family in Kerala were found dead under mysterious circumstances.
When retired teacher Annamma Thomas (57) died in 2002, the family believed it to be a natural death. In 2008, her husband Tom Thomas (66) died of heart failure and in 2011 their son Roy Thomas (40) died similarly. Medical reports revealed that they have been poisoned. Later, in 2014 Annamma's brother, Mathew Manjadiyil (67) died of heart failure and in 2016 two other females (Alphonsa and Sili) from the family died in a similar manner.
Roy's widow Jolly Joseph then married Sili's widower Shaju and claimed ownership of the family's properties. However, Tom's younger son Mojo who happens to be in the US raised suspicion over her and launched complaints with Crime Branch regarding the deaths.
During the investigation, the police found that Jolly was present in the locations when all six persons died and there were traces of cyanide in all the dead bodies.
"The accused made meticulous plans and charted a safe mode to conceal the murders. We have collected call detail records and are waiting for scientific evidence and exhumed the bodies of the deceased. It was a challenging case,” a police officer was quoted as saying by India Today.
