Mani Ratnam’s strong sketching of Mammooty as Deva, Rajini’s father figure and brother from another mother, goes down in the history of Tamil movies as one of the memorable characters ever to be fleshed out on screen with multiple layers. The character is gray, yet humane and that is what strikes the right chord.
