KANAA MOVIE REVIEW
Kanaa, starring Sathyaraj, Aishwarya Rajesh, Darshan in the lead roles is Sivakarthikeyan's first movie as a producer, who has also done an extended cameo role in the film. Lyricist/Singer Arunraja Kamaraj has donned the director's hat for the first time. The rechnical team comprises Dhibu Ninan Thomas (Music), Dinesh Krishnan (Cinematography), and Ruben (Editing) for this sports drama.
As the name suggests, Kanaa is all about dreams. Dreams of Kousalya (Aishwarya Rajesh), Murugesan (Sathyaraj), Nelson Dhilipkumar (Sivakarthikeyan) and others. How they achieve it is the crux of the story. Does the film achieve what it sets out to do? Read further to know.
Arunraja Kamaraj, the director has made an impressive debut with Kanaa. Right from the casting, he has made a mark. Aishwarya Rajesh as Kousalya is a masterstroke. She scores well in both the emotional scenes as well as the cricketing scenes. The effort put in by her to learn cricket and portray this role translates well on screen. There are minor imperfections for sure. But it is those imperfections that make her character look complete. This is another feather to her cap after a string of brilliant performances in recent times.
Sathyaraj, Darshan, Munishkanth and other supporting actors too impress with impactful performances. However, it is Sivakarthikeyan's magic that pulls the rug under our feet. The point of his entry provides the much-needed energy to the audience and the film never looks back thereon. The intensity goes up in every scene thereafter and it finishes on a high note.
Dhibu Ninan Thomas as the music director scores really well with the songs. A few portions in the film could have been left silently in order to create a bigger impact. However, we cannot complain about his work. Dinesh Krishnan's frames look exquisite and his usage of sunlight in the shots involving Sathyaraj is clever. His choice of colors adds warmth to the film.
Kanaa sees Aishwarya Rajesh portraying the role of a cricketer; Sathyaraj, a farmer; and Sivakarthikeyan, a cricket coach. The 3 characters have their own sub-plots and the way the director has drawn parallels to all the 3 stories is something to be applauded. His writing and the packaging of the story is fantastic. Depicting the real problems that a female sportsperson faces such as the ones related to the menstrual cycle and pressure from the society shows the maturity of the director.
The only drawback is the predictability of the story. For a very long time, every sports drama film we see fits into a template. Unfortunately, this one too looks similar, but there is a small twist in the climax and the film could have ended right before that to avoid some cliched thoughts as the film has already conveyed what it wanted to say.
Nevertheless, watch this to see the 'Kanaa' of so many people come to life. The movie has a lot of inspiring portions. The success of this film lies in the fact that it will make you think about your dream, and motivate you to work towards it.

KANAA SONGS REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods Review Board Album Release Date : Aug 23,2018 Vaayadi Petha Pulla
Vocals: Aaradhana Sivakarthikeyan, Sivakarthikeyan, Vaikom Vijayalakshmi
Lyrics: GKB
Vaayadi Petha Pulla is a cute song, to say the least! What a lovely debut for Aaradhana SK, her endearing voice is a delight behind the mic. Though she has very few lines, you most definitely want to hear more of her very soon. This is a folk song that talks about the love for the daughter. GKB's lyrics are on point, and Dhibu's tune and BGMs are very appealing. The usage of the flute is commendable, it adds a lovely flavor to this track that will put a smile on your face. An added surprise is Sivakarthikeyan's flawless rendition alongside Vaikom Vijayalakshmi. With no speed-breakers, Siva gives his best shot.
Oonjala Oonjala
Vocals: Sid Sriram, Niranjana Ramanan
Lyrics: Mohan Rajan
Sid Sriram's voice and tonality is such that he will find his zone in all genres. Likewise, Oonjala Oonjala is a perfect suit for him. Dhibu's work behind this song is highly appreciable as he has neatly produced a classical-rock song that is sure to keep your feet busy. The guitars are brought to the front, and your mind is set to the rhythm that follows suit. Niranjana's mellifluous voice gives this song the extra edge. Apart from the interesting fusion, Mohan Rajan's lyric is something to watch out for. The basic idea of the film is presented with this song and full credit to Mohan Rajan!
Kanne En Kannazhage
Vocals: Kapil Kapilan
Lyrics: Arunraja Kamaraj
A sad ballad, beautifully put together by Dhibu and team. Kapil's voice helps the song with the much required feel. Arunraja's lyrics are strong and they give us an idea of the conflict Kanaa would face. The string orchestration deserves recognition as it stands out as one of the most appreciable factors of the song. The backing vocals, along with the flute and guitars add mileage to the track.
Othaiyadi Pathayila
Vocals: Anirudh Ravichander
Lyrics: Arunraja Kamaraj
In a film that is primarily set in a rural backdrop, we always look forward to that folk melody. Othaiyadi Pathayila is exactly the song that finds its space inside this Kanaa. The flavor is brought in by the usage of the instruments that set up our culture down south. Though the composition might fall into the patterns of how we have usually heard these songs, the instrumentation and construction of the track gives it a different dimension. With tiny bits of swarams, Anirudh takes complete control of this song. His voice is already a winner, and takes this track a level up. Yet again, the backing vocals shine, with ample support from the orchestra.
Savaal
Vocals: Dhibu Ninan Thomas, Arunraja Kamaraj (Rap), Rabbit Mac (Rap)
Lyrics: Mohan Rajan, Rabbit Mac
Savaal will stand up when you take attendance for a rap song in a Arunraja Kamaraj film. It has to exist, right? Savaal is a motivational rap track with all the required elements. Right from the lyrics, to the tune and beats, this song will keep you hooked.
