JACKPOT MOVIE REVIEW
Produced by Suriya's 2D Entertainment, Jyotika and Revathi starrer Jackpot, directed by Kalyan is a fantasy comedy that deals with the adventures of Akshaya (Jyotika) and Masha (Revathi) embarking on a quest to find a treasure brass vessel that multiplies anything inside it. The film opens with the brass vessel getting a separate flashback set in 1918 to showcase its magic. What follows is a sequence of disjointed scenes, that leaves you thinking if it is a hyperlink film.
The establishment of Jyotika and Revathi's characters looks completely contrasting to how it develops because she is seen giving a speech about poverty but it turns out to be a gag because both Akshaya and Masha are involved in conning people. At the end of the film, they are shown to be helping lakhs of people, but the reason for this transformation is not explained convincingly well.
But both Jyotika and Revathi come up with terrific performances. The chemistry between them evokes a lot of joy and they have a blast. However, just decent performances aren't enough to make a film a good one. It is acceptable to have an introduction song out of nowhere for the heroine because it's a commercial potboiler, but when Yogi Babu tastes success at a point, we see a song sequence for Jyotika and Revathi.
There is a long list of supporting actors to boost the comedy portions with Anand Raj, Yogi Babu, Motta Rajendar, Kingsley, Tiger Thangadurai and more, but Anand Raj's character as Manasthan stands out. He has tried out a dual role, and it has worked out well too. Yogi Babu's portions don't make the audience laugh more often than not because most jokes are targeted at his appearance that kind of become cliched. One person mistakes him for a bear, another asks him to remove his mask while he isn't wearing one, and another admits him to a veterinary hospital. These lines are cringe-worthy and make you feel uncomfortable.
There is a subplot involving Samuthirakani, that could have been edited out easily, and there won't be much change to the story. On the other hand, Anandraj and Motta Rajendran run a laughter riot, be it their one-liners or with their body language. The film needed more focus in writing, that could have made it way better. Being a fantasy film, the brass vessel is the USP of the film. It could have been used in more places for us to take the film a little more seriously.
There is a visible lack of coherence between a lot of scenes in the first half. Vishal Chandrasekhar's music and Anandakumar's visuals aren't out of the world but complement the proceedings well. The stunt choreography looks good, despite being slightly over-the-top. We've seen a lot of mass heroes do such stunts, so why not Jyotika? That is one of the redeeming factors in this film that tries in vain to hit the Jackpot.
