Pokkiri
2007 was the last time that Vijay
and Ajith clashed for Pongal.
One of the biggest face offs of
Kollywood and Pokkiri had a head
start with its music finding a
lot of favor with Vijay fans.
Vijay was on the look for a big
hit after a low profile run in
the previous year and with Asin’s
popularity on the upswing, the
movie had everything going for
it. Pokkiri clicked straight away
with the audiences. The songs
were racy, Vijay was in his element
and most importantly Vadivelu
provided a roaring act with the
‘Suttum vizhi chudare’
spoof being the high point. Pokkiri
did not look back.
Alwar
The big Ajith-Vijay face off
seemed a bit low key this time
with Ajith’s side not presenting
too strong a case. Except for
the lead pair of Ajith and Asin,
nothing else in the movie got
noticed ahead of its release.
The public expectation and excitement
was low as the film was being
directed by a little known first
timer Chella. The only bright
side was that Ajith's fans were
a buoyant unit after the super
success of Varalaaru. But, that
couldn’t save Alwar as it
went down without a fight.
Veerasamy
In an era of Ajith, Vijay and
younger stars, Vijaya T. Rajendar
showed that he is not yet ready
to go into the sunset or quietly
content himself with being a veteran;
he still wants to be a lead man.
With Mumtaz for company, he attempted
to create the sentiment-dialogue
magic of his heydays. But, the
past formula failed to find its
way into the minds of the contemporary
audience.
Thamirabharani
The usually reliable Hari teamed
up with the up and coming Vishal
to dish out a commercial potboiler.
Vishal had newcomer Bhanu to romance
and Nadiya to flex his muscles
on. Nadiya made a reentry in a
diva-like role with Prabhu playing
her estranged husband. Yuvan’s
music made the Karuppana Kayyala
song stay on the chartbuster lists
for weeks. At the end of the day,
the movie did make decent business.
