Historically, the Saivite – Vaishnavite divide has been a sensitive issue and nothing has changed in the present it seems. Dasavatharam portrayed a Vaishnavite martyr being tortured and killed by a fanatical Saivite monarch. Religious groups protested against the film, arguing that Saivites were made out to be villains with extreme beliefs.
