Sometimes
it is a scar on the face (like in Harry Potter or our very own
Anbe Sivam), sometimes it’s a goatee beard (Aamir Khan in
Dil Chahtha Hai), and sometimes it’s a ponytail (Amitabh
Bachchan in Cheeni Kum) or long hair (villains of Gautham Menon
films); but when you want to make a familiar face play a role
that is radically different or a shade rebellious, these minor
enhancements do not give that ‘edge’. It is then that
director and the actor together decide that it is better to shed
than to add and out comes the razor and you have a new look. Simple,
shave your head and look different. One of the simplest make-up
techniques in the history of cinema - we look at some of the most
successful and not so successful tonsures in the history of Tamil
cinema.
