‘It’s a man’s world’, now, how far does
that hold true. Chauvinism, as a word went out of fashion a long
time ago, one might even call it obsolete, what more, even feminism
has become outdated. Yes, things have more or less evened out,
at least in the more affluent parts of the world. Well, there
are places that still linger in darkness and we hope things will
change soon. So, the matter is that, if the world has since many
years stopped being a man’s playground – want proof:
well, India has just had its first woman president, America will
have its first very soon and Benazir will topple Musharaf sooner
rather than later. Why then in such a world is cinema still a
male dominion? Well, that’s the widespread feeling. Wait
a minute, is that just a feeling, are we yet to wake up to facts
that women have started contributing big time to cinema, behind
the camera if not in front of it. Less than a week after Deepavali
we hear many lady directors (or should we say directress) walking
away with the rave reviews, the pats on the back and the audience
support, all that in a crowd of big ones directed by their male
counterparts. Let’s profile the prolific lady directors
of our times. Their records, one must say are really enviable.
